Synopsis: The British National Antarctic Expedition led by Captain Robert F. Scott was the culmination of one man's obsession - Sir Clemens Markham. Using his position and influence as President of the Royal Geographical Society, he eventually engineered the acceptance not only the plans but of his nominees as leader and expedition officers. Markham at the centre of a web of intrigue, outwitted his opponents in the British Government, The Admiralty and The Royal Society. His own confidential and outspoken account, published here for the first time, has only recently come to light. Clive Holland, former archivist at the Scott Polar Research Institute, introduces the account and balances Markham's own version with other evidence.
